Late Royal flourish sets up date with Donegal

Meath 0-14 Sligo 1-09

Meath edged out Sligo in Navan on Saturday evening and secured their first win in the qualifiers since 2011. Sligo were a goal ahead at the break 1-06 to 0-06 and they were full value for it. Meath only registered four from play in the opening half with these scores coming from captain Graham Reilly and James McEntee. The Sligo goal came on 30 minutes, when Patrick O’Connor bursted through from midfield before he passed the ball to O’Kelly Lynch who bundled the ball past Paddy O’Rourke in the Meath goal.

Meath did fight back in the second and they drew level on 54 minutes, with scores from Graham Reilly, Donal Lenihan, Cillian O’Sullivan and Sean Tobin registering points. However, they couldn’t move ahead and Sligo through their captain Neill Ewing were one clear again on 58 minutes after he kicked a fantastic score. However, the tide turned in Meath’s favour as Brendan Egan was given a black card and Meath manager Andy McEntee introduced Mickey Newman of the substitute bench for Meath to try and re-energise his charges. Newman was the match winner in the end as he hit two frees, while Seanie Tobin also converted a 45 and tapped over an insurance point as Meath now move on to play Donegal in the next round.

Player of the Match: Sean Tobin
