Dr Crokes

Underdogs going into this weekends All Ireland semi final with Corofin, Dr Crokes have it all to do to reach the final on St Patrick’s day. The Killarney side will not be happy with just a Munster success this year – they already have seven Munster titles and will dearly want to add to their solitary All Ireland title from 1992. Sportstalk takes a quick look at the history of this famous GAA club.

Founded in 186, Dr Crokes has the most successful GAA team in Killarney and its environs.

The club is named after Archbishop Dr Croke, who also gave his name to Croke Park.

Their most notable triumph was the capture of the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship in 1992.

The club has won the Munster Club Championship on seven occasions – 1991, 1992, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016. The club has won the Kerry Senior Football Championship on eleven occasions, which puts them just behind joint leaders in the role of honour behind Luane Rangers and Austin Stacks who both have twelve.

Dr Crokes is the only club in Killarney with a hurling team, which has had two notable successes; winning the Kerry Intermediate Hurling Championship in 1999 and 2001.

The 2007 Kerry All Ireland Senior Football championship winning team was trained by former Dr Crokes trainer Pat O’Shea.

The 2013 Kerry senior football panel featured 5 Crokes players (Colm Cooper, Eoin Brosnan, Kieran O’Leary, Johnny Buckey, and Fionn Fitzgerald).
