All Star Records

You don’t have to do much fishing around to find some interesting records with regards to the GAA All Star awards. Just click into Wikipedia and there is a comprehensive list of winners and various records.

Most All Stars won – Henry Shefflin with 11.

One player, Ray Cummins of Cork, holds the unique record of winning a hurling and a football All Star in the same year (1971). This is a record that in all likelihood will never be equalled.

Three other players share the distinction of winning All Star awards in both hurling and football, but they did not win the accolades in the same year. These players are:

Jimmy Barry-Murphy of Cork, Brian Murphy of Cork, Liam Currams of Offaly

Tommy Walsh of Kilkenny has won nine hurling All Star Awards in five different positions; another record unlikely to be equalled or surpassed. .

Most All Star awards without winning an All Ireland title – John Mullane of Waterford with 5.

Only two counties have won All Stars for every position in both football and hurling – Offaly and Galway. Cork come close but are missing two positions from the football selection.

What about the clubs with the most All Star winners. Well, according to our calculations it’s a tie between Ballyhale Shamrocks and James Stephens, both of Kilkenny and both with a total of 27 All Star awards.

Ballyhale’s list is made up of 8 men –

Henry Shefflin (11) Liam Fennelly (4) James “Cha” Fitzpatrick (3) Michael Fennelly (3) T. J. Reid (3) Colin Fennelly (1) Ger Fennelly (1) Joseph Holden (1)

James Stephens’ list is made up of 10 men –

Joe Hennessy (5) Liam ‘Chunky’ O’Brien (4) Phil “Fan” Larkin (4) Jackie Tyrell (4) Peter Barry (3) Eoin Larkin (2) Brian Cody (2) Brian McEvoy (1) Philly Larkin (1) Mick Crotty (1)

The football club with the most All Star awards is not as immediately obvious. We had to do a bit of actual research on this. It will come as little surprise that it’s a Kerry club – Austin Stacks. They have 25 All Stars so far, comprised of 7 men.

Mikey Sheehy (7) Ger Power (6) John O’Keefe (5) Kieran Donaghy (3) Dinny Long (2) Ger O’Keeffe (1) Pa Laide (1)

The greatest dual club in Ireland? Difficult to say for sure, particularly at any given time but in terms of silverware St Finbarrs of Cork must surely be a contender. The famous Cork city side is the only club in Ireland to win All-Ireland club championships in both hurling and football – three club All Irelands in football and two in hurling. This amazing ability to produce top class players in both codes is reflected in their haul of All Stars. With 26 All Star awards they sit just behind Ballyhale and James Stephens. However the spread of awards between hurling and football makes them quite unique. Jimmy Barry Murphy won multiple awards in both – hurling (5) football (2). Other hurling winners from the club include Ger Cunningham (4) Ronan Curran (3) Charlie McCarthy (3) Tony Maher (2) Gerald McCarthy (1). Along with Jimmy Barry, the other footballers are  – Michael Shields (2) John Kerins (2) Dave Barry (1) Mick Slocum (1).
