Croker Controversy

Despite Cork achieving an historic 6 in a row, winning the Ladies football decider 1.08 – 1.07, the game has been shrouded in controversy. A shot from Dublin’s Carla Rowe in the 23rd minute was disallowed by the umpire despite an appeal to the umpire at the time. Differing angles from TG4 clearly show the ball crossing between the posts.

Many have wondered why Hawk-Eye wasn’t called upon, but due to the different sized balls in both mens football and hurling, size 5’s and ladies football and camogie, size 4’s, to operate Hawk-Eye would mean the whole system would have to be re-calibrated.

This is not the first time Dublin ladies have been swamped in controversial decisions. In 2015 their camogie players were involved with Clare in a coin toss scenario when both teams ended on level on points in the league. It was decided by the camogie association that the team who would progress to meet Wexford would be decided by coin-toss. However, both teams threatened to leave the campaign, a replay was arranged and Dublin won going down to Wexford two days later.

As of last night Geogory McConigle had announced that the executive of the county board would be meeting tonight (Monday) to discuss the disallowed point. The board will be examining the rules to see if they have grounds to appeal.

In 2014 minor hurling semifinal decider a legitimate point by Galway against Limerick was indicated wide by Hawk-Eye but later showed to have passed between the posts. It was revealed after the game that there was a fault in the system. Galway’s appeal was turned down and the referees final score given was accepted. Limerick advanced.

It remains seen whether Dublin will be successful this time.
