Giving their predictions for this year’s provincial championships and the business end of the All-Ireland series on the first episode of this season’s Super8s podcast Shane Curran believes Armagh could be the dark horses.
The Orchard County got to the All-Ireland quarter- finals last year, were promoted from Division 3 this year and also claimed the Division 3 title.
Curran said: “I would put in Armagh as a dark horse. They seem to be getting the mix right. Whether this year is the year they have enough (I don’t know). Kieran McGeeney is silently doing some good work with Armagh.”
Doron Harte commented on McGeeney’s charges having seen them play and defeat Westmeath this year in the league: “I saw them in the league. Lots of pace and power up front and I thought they played a good brand of football.”
Kieran Martin knows first hand how good Armagh are having played against them. The Westmeath footballer said: “Very big men but they are mobile as well. They are after changing it up a bit and they have the big full forward; big target man. I think he lit up the league this year. No one could really handle it. They have that option. They’ve the long highball as well.”
Martin went on to say: “They were unlucky last year as well not to get promoted. Tipperary got the goal literally in the last seconds to put them ahead. In fairness they got through Division 3 in their ease.”
