What a day for Roscommon! Sportstalk columnist and madcap former goalkeeper Shane Curran has taken over the reins as the manager of the under 20 county football team.
The Ex St Brigids netminder who won an All-Ireland club title with the side in 2013 has already experienced management with local side Padraig Pearses and led them to a county final in 2015 where they were ultimately defeated by rivals Clann Na nGael. He was also involved as goalkeeping coach with the Laois county side in 2016.
Curran has made no secret of his desire to get involved in the managerial side of the game and has his sights set on taking over the main job in Roscommon GAA one day, but considering how well Kevin McStay did last year in that position, he may have to refrain from taking the main position for a while.
However the under 20 side is an important step up the ladder. It may be the first year of the championship, but recent underage tournaments have shown that there is plenty of potential in the county as they have won 2 Connacht under 21 titles in the last 4 years. So there is reason to believe that something similar or perhaps even greater can be achieved next year.
Best of luck to Shane and his management team for the coming year.
