Offaly 0-11 Cork 1-13
Cork were made work hard very hard for their 5 point victory over Offaly in Birr on Saturday to record their 4th consecutive win in Group 2 of the 2017 Liberty Insurance All-Ireland Championship. Offaly despite the defeat will take consolation in a much improved performance after their poor showing against Wexford 2 weeks previously.
Their display will give them confidence in going into their final game against Tipperary this weekend. Corner forward Ann Marie Guinan set the tone for Offaly with a point within the first minute. Minutes later she turned provider for Siobhan Flannery to score. Flannery had 2 more points to extend Offaly’s lead to 0-4 to Cork’s no score after 6 minutes. Ashling Thompson then got Cork off the mark but it was the home side who continued to impress with Flannery and Arlene Watkins keeping the scoreboard ticking over.
With 17 minutes on the clock Cork sprung to life when Orla Cronin found Hannah Looney who hand passed a goal to the back of the net. Both set of forwards exchanged points to leave Cork 1-6 to 0-8 ahead at the break. Cork had to call on keeper Aoife Murray on a number of occasions to keep the Offaly attack at bay. Offaly continued to impress in the second half with Arlene Watkins and Siobhan Flannery adding points. However Cork showed their class finishing strongly scoring 6 of the game’s last 7 scores with Katrina Macey, Orla Cotter and Julia White all hitting the target to help Cork claim victory on a final scoreline of 1-13 to 0-11.
With 4 wins from 4 Cork will finish top of Group 2 which means a place in this year’s All-Ireland semi-final. Offaly will go in search of a win against Tipperary next weekend and will be hoping Wexford beat Limerick which will result in Paddy Kirwan’s side qualifying to the quarter final stage of this year’s championship.
