GAA Sunrise: “a team that is capable of dealing with Dublin’s forwards” Shane Curran

Ahead of Sunday’s All-Ireland Football Final Shane Curran and Chloe Kelly have been chatting on GAA Sunrise about all aspects of what promises to be another exciting contest between Dublin and Mayo.

For Curran, Sunday’s game will see the two best teams in the country go head to head with Sam Maguire being the ultimate prize: “We are going to see the two best teams in the country without a doubt and two teams that I think are very well matched.”

While Kelly believes Mayo are the one team capable of dealing with Dublin’s potent forward line: “For the first time ever we are dealing with a team that is capable of dealing with Dublin’s forwards. We haven’t seen that so far in the Leinster Championship or the All-Ireland Championship”

With last year’s final going to a replay Curran feels that there will be very little between the sides on Sunday. He agreed with Kelly that Mayo are the only side who have the players to take on Dublin: “Over the past number of meetings between the two sides maybe outside the league meeting earlier on in the year, and certainly in the championship it’s splitting hair between the two sides. I don’t think it will be much different Sunday. Mayo are the only side, in my view, they have the players that can stand up to them individually but collectively they know their jobs as well. They know how to defend in numbers at the right time.”

If Mayo are to finally reach the Promised Land and bring Sam Maguire back to the county for the first time since 1951 Curran believes that a few things have to go their way: “If they can get the first goal, if they can be with Dublin for 45/50 minutes I think we’ll see Mayo close the game out. What they don’t want to be doing is chasing the game; if you are chasing the game against Dublin it’s hard on the legs.

He went on to say: “They have the players; individually and collectively and if small little things go in their way it can tip the balance in their favour.”
