All eyes on Pairc Ui Chaoimh pitch – O’hAilpin

On Sunday Cork hurlers will play their first Munster Championship tie at the newly renovated Pairc Ui Chaoimh when they take on Clare. Ahead of the game the talk is about the pitch and what state it will be in come 4pm on Sunday.

The pitch came in for a lot of scrutiny during last year’s All Ireland Hurling quarter-finals when it started to cut up and again this year during both the hurlers’ and footballers’ league campaign. There was very little grass visible during the league games and a lot of sand put down with people pointing out its resemblance to a beach.

Just recently the Cork GAA Ground played host to three sell-out Ed Sheeran gigs so all eyes will very much be on the state of the pitch on Sunday afternoon.

On this week’s Super8s Podcast Sean Og O’hAilpin admitted that all eyes will be on the pitch  before anyone takes an interest on the 30 players who will take to the field:

“You have going into this game; the eyes won’t be on the 30 players, the eyes will be on the pitch number 1 to see how Pairc Ui Chaoimh is.”

The former Cork player is hoping the pitch will be okay: “It was scandalous during the league. It was like hurling and football games on a beach. Hopefully the pitch will be up to standard.”

O’hAilpin is looking forward to the game and like all GAA supporters he hopes the standard of hurling will be the focal point, not the Pairc Ui Chaoimh pitch.
