Championship Football Review: Monaghan in strong position to take Fermanagh exam

Monaghan v Fermanagh, Clones, Saturday, 7pm

The Ulster Football Championship throws in this Saturday with Monaghan taking on Fermanagh in Clones. The game will also be shown on RTE television for interested viewers. Fermanagh will travel to Clones knowing that they will be up against as their form in the league was very poor, in fact the Ernesiders were relegated from Division 2 alongside Derry. Fermanagh only had two wins in Division 2 against Down and Clare, while they were hammered by Kildare and Meath.

Monaghan under Malachy O’Rourke had a good Division 1 campaign, they pushed Dublin close and defeated Kerry so they are not too far away when it comes to the best teams. Most people and pundits will be expecting Monaghan to easily brush aside Fermanagh in this game, but Ulster football can throw up surprises now and then. Monaghan will look to the in form Jack McCarron, Conor McManus and Darren Hughes, while Fermanagh will want massive games from Sean Quigley, Tomas Corrigan and Ryan Jones.

Monaghan are firm favourites for the game at 1/6, with Fermanagh 9/2. I can only see one winner here, Monaghan to win.

Verdict: Monaghan by 5
