Championship Review: Mayo run a little green in first run out of the Championship 2017

Mayo 2-14 Sligo 0-11

Mayo booked their place in the Connacht Senior Football Semi-Final with victory over Sligo at McHale Park on Sunday last. Mayo led at the break 1-06 to 0-05, with the goal coming from centre forward Diarmuid O’Connor. Mayo didn’t particularly play well in the opening half, but they still had the four point lead and the aid of wind to come in the second half. However, it must be said they didn’t make full advantage of it, Sligo pushed them all the way and were still in the game with 15 minutes to go. However, it was Cillian O’Connor that pounced with 1-02 to close the game out.

After 5 minutes in the opening half, the score was 0-03 to 0-02, to Sligo with Stephen Coen pointing twice and Adrian Marren grabbing a nice score. Cillian O’Connor and Andy Moran pointed for Mayo. It was nip and tuck up until 34 minutes when Diarmuid O’Connor grabbed a well needed goal for Mayo. The sides went in 1-06 to 0-05. Sligo started the second half much brighter than their opponents and goalkeeper Adrian Devaney landed a nice free on 37 minutes to narrow the gap to three.

However, debutant and Mayo dual star Fergal Boland pointed which was then followed by another point from Moran. However, the Yeats County responded again with Mark Breheny and Paddy O’Connor getting nice points. Boland again pointed on 52 minutes, before Cillian O’Connor kicked his fourth point from a placed ball, Marren responded for Sligo and Mayo only led by four points with just 10 minutes to play.

It was the Ballintubber full forward that put more gloss on the win with his fisted goal after been set up by substitute Conor Loftus. He added two further points, 1 from play and 1 from a free to wrap up the tie.

Mayo advance to a meeting with Galway on June 11th.
