Christy Ring Review: Down overcome a much improved Roscommon side

Down 2-24 Roscommon 1-20

An exciting game in Ballycran ended in victory for the Down hurlers last weekend. The score suggests it was plain sailing for Down, but it was far from it. Roscommon led by 5 points halfway through the second half, however a goal from Down ace attacker Eoghan Sands on 58 minutes was the catalyst for a Down revival that eventually yielded a 7 point victory. After 13 minutes in the opening half, Roscommon led 0-09 to 0-06, however Down responded with a goal from Malachy Magee. At half time the score was 1-13 to 1-10 to Roscommon, Naos Connaughton with the Rossies goal coming on 20 minutes.

The second half was much the same with both sides trading blows, with Shane Curley pointing frees, to stretch the lead out to 1-15 to 1-10 after 37 minutes. Down responded with four points in a row though, with Sheehan pointing frees at his own will. Down took control halfway through the second half and narrowed the gap to 1 point, before Sands struck a vital goal on 58 minutes. Pointed frees from Sheehan stretched the lead further and Down played out the game notching points easily.

The best players for Down were Paul Sheehan, Eoghan Sands and Malachy Magee, while for Roscommon, Naos Connaughton, Robbie Fallon and Jason Coyne impressed.

Player of Match: Paul Sheehan, scored 0-15 in a remarkable peformance
