Monaghan 1-24 Down 1-16
Monaghan booked their place in the All Ireland quarter final against Dublin next weekend with a convincing 8 point win over Down at Croke Park on Saturday evening.
The game began at blistering pace with the first score coming inside the opening 30 seconds courtesy of a well taken point from Darren Hughes. His brother Kieran raised a white flag minute layer, before Darragh O’ Hanlon got the Mourne men on the board with a free. Caolan Mooney got the sides back on level terms, before Connaire Garrison scored a fine goal on 33 minutes to cancel out Fintan Kelly’s goal for Monaghan on 26 minutes . It was all square at the break 1-09 a piece and all to play for in the second half.
Malachy O’ Rourke clearly thought there had to be changes made and he made 3 changes with McCarron, Duffy and McCarthy all coming into the fray. Shane Carey got the first score from play for a Monaghan forward on 46 minutes, the Farney men went on to kick four further points in a row to establish a 1-16 to 1-11 lead. Conor McCarthy, Ryan Wylie and Conor McManus all scoring.
Jerome Johnston did register a score for Down but with Owen Duffy coming to the fore the Farney army weren’t going to be stopped. Monaghan go on to meet Dublin next Saturday evening in what will be a massive attendance at Croke Park.
