Kavanagh the star as Carlow’s rising continues

Carlow 4-14
Louth  1-11

In the first of our Leinster Finals to watch Carlow were crowned Leinster Junior Champions after a very impressive second half display by Carlow’s wing forward and player of the game Ciara Kavanagh.

Louth started the better of the teams and setup up camp for long periods in the Carlow defence but couldn’t find the scores to compliment their early dominance. Aoife Greogry who  lined out at center forward for Louth was excellent and after leveling proceedings early on Louth suffered a nightmare couple of minutes conceeding two quick goals to leave it 2-1 to 0-02 after 11 minutes.

Gregory help steady the ship as she helped herself to a couple of fine scores before Carlow in what was the move of the match scored another goal to leave it 3-02 to 0-04 at 25 minutes. Ciara Kavanagh was lighting up the first half for Carlow with the fiesty Emma Byrne also playing well.

Again it was Aoife Gregory who helped herself to 3 more points and taking out the lucky goals Louth were the better side going into the break. The scoreboard displayed 3-02 to 0-07 in favour of Carlow.

Ger Power’s half time team talk worked best as the Carlow ladies came out flying with Ciara Kavanagh getting the opening score after 13 seconds. This was to be the theme for the rest of the half as Kavanagh, Mary Sullivan (Sub) and Lydia Kelly (Sub) ran the show. The score was 4-10 to 0-10 after 50 minutes and to their credit Louth never gave up with Leanne Sharkey, Eleanor Smyth and Paula Murray playing well alongside the excellent Aoife Gregory.

Louth did get a consolation goal after a goal mouth scramble and we are still not certain who got on the end of it but it was a testament to the spirit in the Louth team as they never gave up and will fancy themselves to get alot closer to Carlow upon the next meeting.

Carlow ran out 4-14 to 1-11 with star player Ciara Kavanagh picking up the player of the match award.
