MAYO 1-8 ROSCOMMON 1-7
There was a dramatic climax to this Connacht derby at Mc Hale Park as Brian Reapes goal five minutes from time nudged Mayo over the line for an opening round win in horrendous weather conditions. The hosts had trailed by four at half time but three second half points from Jason Doherty hauled them back before Reape drilled home a crucial goal.
Playing with the breeze the Rossies bossed the first half but still only led 0-5 to 0-1 at the break, Colin Compton Enda Smith, Donie Smith and Shane Killoran among the scores while Mayo keeper Rob Hennelly made a great save to deny Cathal Cregg.
Mayo improved in the second half Diarmuid O’Connor opened their second half tally and despite a rising wide count they pushed on to secure the win, a late Killoran shot ended in the Mayo net but it came too late to make a difference.
