No upsets for provincial winners as others face into relegation battle

There were no upsets for the provincial champions when they entered the TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Senior Football Championship at the weekend.

Donegal, Cork, Dublin and Galway all had wins in their opening games with Cork, Dublin and Galway easily seeing off their opposition.

For Tipperary, Cavan and Waterford they now face into a relegation battle. Either Armagh or Monaghan will join them after this weekend’s games.

Sportstalk’s Ladies Football expert Deniese O’Flaherty spoke about the upcoming relegation fight on this week’s Sportsgirls Podcast. She said: “It is tough but that’s the way the championship is done now.”

The first games of this year’s relegation battle will take place on Saturday August 11th. With the 3rd place in Group 1 v 3rd place in Group 2 and in the second game 3rd place in Group 2 will take on 3rd place in Group 4. The losers will play each other in a relegation play-off with the defeated team relegated to the Intermediate Championship for 2019.

Deniese believes with so much as stake the relegation battle will be an exciting one but tough too: “The relegation battle will be just as tough and just as exciting as the knock-out stages in the Ladies Senior Championship.”
