“Super 8’s is a great idea…next step is a tiered championship” – Shane Curran previews the Super 8’s

Speaking on our latest Super 8’s podcast, Shane Curran spoke about Sunday’s double header in Croke Park saying

” I don’t know how it’s financially viable. I think they need 30,000 to run Croke Park as a validated venue that’ll actually turn a few pound for them. There’s going to be nowhere near 30,000 in it on Sunday, and for a lot of the games it won’t be near that figure because I think the big worry about the Super 8’s now is will it throw up games that are dead rubbers.”

Curran also talked about the format of the championship saying

“We are in to the first phase of a change in format to the championship. I think the Super 8’s are a great idea. I think there needs to be a good bit of tweaking done to it. It’s a step in the right direction, in terms of giving counties more games. The next step is a tiered format of championship. That will come because the chasm is only going to get wider between the have and have not’s. Fixturing needs to be looked at after the debacle in Newbridge. I think the more compact, smaller grounds lend themselves to better festivals of football and to better entertainment. I think you’re looking at Croke Park being used for the biggest games going forward and that’s All-Ireland semi-finals, and maybe one or two fixtures in the Super 8 where the big guns come together.”
