Top 10 tips for Pre Season GAA Club Training

  1. Eat a healthy dinner before training. Too many lads have puked their guts up after eating their Mammy’s dinner an hour before training.
  2. Pick a group with a similar standard to yourself – if ya are carrying weight, have a good look around for a few lads in the same boat. You will look good finishing ahead of the group.
  3. Avoid the young lad who is on the senior panel for the first time – he will be very keen and you probably won’t be able to keep up to him. Avoid at all costs.
  4. Don’t go all out in the first fitness test of the year – you will find it hard to improve for the next one. Give yourself something to improve on for the next fitness test in a few weeks’ time.
  5. Don’t wear new white shorts and the new jersey you got as a Christmas present, the physical trainer will have you down on the ground doing sit ups, plank, squats etc. You will get them destroyed and the Missus or the mammy will go mental!
  6. Don’t do leg day in the gym the night before a tough running session – you will only end up pulling the hamstring and miss the first few weeks of the season and be down the pecking order straight away.
  7. Avoid wearing new boots for the first time – have them broken in before the tough session or you will have blisters!
  8. Don’t go sprinting off on the first lap of a fitness test – there is always one guy who does it and he is barely able to finish the test! Pace yourself and leave something in the tank for the last lap.
  9. Invest in a woolly hat and gloves – if you are brave enough get a pair of leggings but be ready for the abuse from your team-mates!
  10. Do not go on a bender the night before – it will be hard enough without drink from the night before. You will only regret it and you will pay for it with every run!
