Training for G4M&O week four – I’ve suffered my first injury

Week 4 of our training for G4M&O – just think of your man from Big Brother saying it. It sounds better. I couldn’t attend last week’s training session and was shocked at the effect it had on me. I really missed the training, well I didn’t miss the laps and stretches but I did miss the craic and the banter.

This week I had my first injury; yes, I broke a nail. No, I’m not into finely manicured nails but I pride myself on being able to have some, after years of biting them. It was traumatic, but I will survive. I hope you do realise I am being sarcastic.

Any person who was near the Higginstown area of Granard last night would’ve had some laugh if they’d come into the football ground and saw 20 plus women doing bunny jumps and then their version of rock the boat. And as for the double entendres. Poor Jimmy and Gabriel didn’t know where to look. We were definitely like giggling schoolgirls. Who knew training could be so much fun.

It is amazing how far we have come on. A few of us played some kind of football but for a lot it’s their first experience of Gaelic Football and it’s wonderful to see their progress. That’s what this is all about.

A lot of us are on a personal journey and hope to get different things out of it. To be honest if someone had said to me a few years ago I’d be out playing football I’d have given them a smart answer. I’ve always loved being on the other side of the white line and never would’ve had great confidence to do something like this; yes some may be surprised by that. I have to say I’m so glad I am doing it.

One of the girls told me last night that she can’t believe she is back playing especially since she knew very few women when she started off. She now has plenty of new friends. I think that has been one of the best things about this experience.

The wonderful thing about the group women is that we are there for each other and are able to laugh at our mistakes and help each other out. A few weeks ago we said we’d do the training for six weeks and then see if we wanted to form a team. Now we are planning our winter sessions and of course the Christmas Party was mentioned too.

Next week we go to battle on the field against each other. Now, that should be fun. I better mind my nails though. It will be interesting to see if we can keep quiet for a whole game. That will be harder done than the playing of the football.
